Start with the room, not the rack price
Choose a location that leaves normal access and required ventilation unobstructed. Observe whether laundry dries reliably or leaves persistent condensation and damp surfaces. EPA guidance emphasizes controlling excess indoor moisture and using ventilation appropriate to outdoor conditions.
Opening a window is not automatically helpful on a very humid day. In a small apartment, record temperature and relative humidity as well as how long a normal load takes to dry. A cheap rack does not solve an unsuitable drying environment.
Estimate the electricity actually avoided
Suppose eight dryer loads would use 2.00 kWh each. Avoiding those loads removes an illustrative 16 kWh, worth $2.88 at $0.18/kWh. If rack drying requires an additional 0.60 kWh of dehumidifier use per load, it adds 4.80 kWh.
The modeled net saving becomes 11.20 kWh, or about $2.02. These values are hypothetical and exclude changes to space heating or cooling. A gas dryer would require a different fuel calculation.
Separate existing use from additional use
If a dehumidifier already operates, do not charge its entire monthly bill to laundry. Equally, do not assume its extra work is free just because it was already switched on. Compare representative drying days with otherwise similar days and label the uncertainty.
Use the washer’s appropriate spin setting and space items according to their care instructions. Record bulky loads separately from light garments; they create different practical demands on the same room.
Choose a mixed routine if it works better
You do not have to send every item to the same drying method. A rack may suit some loads while the dryer handles others during damp weather or busy weeks. Count only cycles genuinely avoided. Include the rack purchase in a simple budget, but prioritize a routine that leaves the apartment usable and dry. Persistent moisture problems deserve attention from the responsible building professional rather than a more optimistic savings estimate.
