Map a permitted airflow path
Identify openings that can be used safely and rooms that sit between them. A single open window and a closed interior door may behave very differently from openings on opposite sides of the apartment. Observe the actual breeze instead of assuming the floor plan guarantees cross-flow.
Keep security, fall protection and building rules in view. Do not prop open fire doors or use shared corridors as an improvised ventilation route. Required mechanical ventilation has a separate role.
Compare indoor and outdoor conditions
Note temperature and humidity inside and outside before trying a window routine. EPA guidance recommends ventilation appropriate to outdoor conditions and emphasizes moisture control. If outdoor air is hot, humid or polluted, more air exchange may not produce the comfort result you want.
A cooler evening is an opportunity to evaluate, not a guarantee. Record whether indoor temperature falls and whether the room remains acceptable after openings are closed.
Budget a fan separately
If a permitted setup uses a 35 W fan for four hours, the hypothetical electricity use is 0.14 kWh. At $0.18/kWh over 30 evenings, the cost is about $0.76. Keep that direct fan cost separate from any estimated AC energy avoided.
You cannot claim the whole previous AC schedule as a saving unless those sessions were actually replaced under comparable conditions. Weather changes alone can reduce cooling demand.
Build a simple operating routine
Write down when you check outside conditions, which openings you use and when you close them. Note noise, insects and security constraints that affect whether the routine is sustainable. Use shading and permitted cooling equipment as needed rather than insisting on open windows through unsuitable weather. A week of observations can reveal which rooms benefit and which need another approach, without assigning an unsupported percentage reduction to the apartment’s summer bill.
