Record the departure setup

List what remains powered and which settings were changed. Follow the equipment and building instructions rather than choosing an arbitrary shutdown routine.

For a rental, note whether utilities cover only your unit and whether any services are included in rent. A payment or account balance can change even when your own electricity consumption falls.

Estimate the away-period energy

Suppose the remaining equipment averages a hypothetical 120 W over a ten-day trip. Energy is 0.12 × 24 × 10 = 28.8 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, the variable electricity cost is about $5.18.

A separate fixed monthly fee would remain according to your tariff. Heating or cooling during extreme weather could make the real average very different; this example is not a prediction for every unoccupied apartment.

Compare actual dates, not whole statements

A monthly bill includes days before departure and after your return. Use interval or daily data where available to isolate the absence, checking for estimates and missing periods. Compare similar weather and equipment settings if you have records from another trip.

A budget-billing payment is particularly unsuitable as a direct measure of vacation energy. Use the actual kWh and current charges fields instead.

Follow up on an unexpected pattern

If consumption is materially above the setup you recorded, look for timed devices, changed controls or maintenance issues. Keep a dated log and contact the responsible service provider when appropriate. Do not infer a wiring fault or meter problem solely from continuing use. Before the next trip, review optional loads with normal controls while preserving food storage, required building operation and any services that depend on power or connectivity.
