Solve the installation first
ENERGY STAR explains that a heat pump dryer recirculates air, removes moisture through condensation and collects or drains that water. It does not need the same exterior exhaust vent as a conventional vented dryer. That can matter in an apartment without an existing vent.
Ventless does not mean it can be installed anywhere. Check the specific model’s supply, clearances, drainage or tank-emptying arrangement, and any permitted stacking kit. Get the owner’s agreement before changes to a rental. Include the space needed to open the door and reach maintenance components.
Compare a year of actual laundry needs
Imagine two suitable electric dryers: A uses 3 kWh for a representative load, while B uses 1.2 kWh for an equivalent load. These are hypothetical values, not category averages. At 200 loads a year and $0.18/kWh, A costs $108 in electricity and B costs $43.20.
The difference is $64.80 per year. If B costs $400 more to buy, simple energy-only payback is about 6.17 years. At 100 loads annually, the same premium would take about 12.35 years to recover. At 300 loads, about 4.12 years.
Include the routine as well as the dollars
Record how long a representative load takes, whether your usual fabrics fit the recommended programs, and what needs cleaning or emptying. Do not compare one model’s small test load with another’s full drum. Capacity and scheduling determine whether you can complete the laundry you need.
ENERGY STAR highlights moisture-sensing termination and lint-filter care. Follow the chosen model’s manual for maintenance rather than assuming all dryers share the same procedure. A model that saves energy on paper still needs a routine that the household can sustain.
Separate installation savings from electricity savings
If one option requires a new approved vent or electrical work, obtain the actual installation quote and add it to that option’s cost. Conversely, a model needing an unavailable connection may be unsuitable even if its projected energy use is low.
The simple example excludes maintenance, repairs, financing and resale. It also assumes both dryers remain usable for the selected period. For renters, the likely length of stay and whether the appliance can move with you are practical considerations. Keep those beside the calculation instead of extending a payback result beyond your realistic ownership plans.
