Compare suitable equipment first
Start with installation compatibility and an appropriate capacity range. Do not compare a unit that fits your window with one that requires a different opening or unsupported installation. Record exact models and use efficiency information based on comparable test conditions.
Keep noise figures, controls and maintenance access in separate columns. Those features may justify paying more, but they should not be converted into invented electricity savings in a payback calculation.
Model the cooling season you expect
Assume a suitable conventional option averages 650 W and an alternative averages 500 W under the same hypothetical routine. At eight hours per day for 90 days, the difference is 0.15 × 8 × 90 = 108 kWh.
At $0.18/kWh, the modeled seasonal saving is $19.44. A $150 price premium would take about 7.7 comparable seasons to recover through electricity alone. These averages are assumptions, not a test of inverter technology or specific products.
Check how sensitive the result is
At only 30 cooling days, the same assumptions yield 36 kWh and $6.48 in annual savings; the simple payback becomes about 23 years. A hotter or longer season changes the result in the other direction.
Avoid assuming that the appliance will necessarily last long enough to reach the modeled break-even point. Include delivery and required installation costs if they differ, and consider the period you expect to remain in the apartment.
Separate replacement from a first purchase
When buying your first AC, compare the premium between two acceptable options. When replacing a functioning unit, the relevant upfront cost may be the full new purchase, not just that premium. Save both scenarios if you are unsure. A quieter, more controllable unit can still be appealing when energy payback is slow; a clear comparison lets you value those benefits without promising savings the evidence cannot support.
