Start at the window
Before looking at a sale price, measure the window opening and check the building’s installation requirements. A window unit needs compatible dimensions and the support specified by its manufacturer. A portable unit needs a suitable exhaust route and enough space for the unit, hoses and clearances.
Portable does not mean it works in a closed room without venting. Check the exact window kit and the permitted hose arrangement. A unit that cannot be fitted correctly is a poor purchase regardless of the listed discount.

Record sound measurements only when the conditions are comparable. A number measured at a different distance or fan setting is not a reliable head-to-head comparison.
Compare specific costs
As a worked example, imagine option A costs $300 and uses 400 kWh per cooling season. Option B costs $400 and uses 600 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, their annual electricity costs are $72 and $108. Over three seasons, purchase plus electricity is $516 for A and $724 for B.
Those are hypothetical options, not typical performance figures for the two AC categories. The $208 difference only holds for those inputs. Add any installation or maintenance costs separately.
Give the apartment the final vote
A lower estimated running cost is useful only if the appliance fits and keeps the intended room comfortable. Write down your non-negotiables before choosing: permission, compatible opening, usable floor space, power supply, acceptable noise and seasonal storage.
If you are unsure about mounting or electrical suitability, ask the building manager or an appropriate installer. Keep the model’s manual and your measurements together so you can check the same facts against every candidate.
Use three decision gates before comparing dollars
- Can it be installed as specified? If the window, exhaust arrangement, electrical supply or building rules are incompatible, stop comparing that model until the issue is resolved.
- Can it do the required job? Record room conditions and the exact capacity rating. A unit that leaves the intended space uncomfortable is not a like-for-like alternative just because its purchase price is lower.
- Does the complete cost fit? Include the kit and installation separately from electricity. Compare annual energy figures only when their operating assumptions are suitable for the comparison.
If both designs pass, compare the models with a written record of floor-space needs, drainage, maintenance, sound evidence and storage. If neither passes, revisit the constraints rather than forcing a winner. The FTC’s EnergyGuide explanation describes why a printed operating cost is an estimate.
