Define what the hood does

Check whether the hood exhausts outdoors or recirculates air through filters, and consult its operating instructions. These arrangements do not perform every ventilation task in the same way. EPA guidance favors appliances that vent combustion pollutants outside where possible.

Record the actual fan setting rather than applying the highest listed wattage to all cooking time. If the lights have their own switch, their hours may differ from the fan’s hours.

Add the electrical loads

In a hypothetical session, a 60 W fan and 8 W light operate together for one hour. Their combined energy is 68 ÷ 1,000 = 0.068 kWh. Eighteen sessions use 1.224 kWh, costing $0.22032 at $0.18/kWh.

Round this to about $0.22 for a practical budget. If the light remains on another three hours each day, add that period separately. The extra lighting cannot be inferred from the cooking schedule alone.

Compare performance before a replacement

ENERGY STAR’s ventilation criteria include range hoods and evaluate airflow efficiency and sound under specified conditions. A lower wattage model with inadequate capture for the installation is not necessarily an improvement.

Record fit, duct requirements, permitted installation and accessible filter care. Follow the appliance manual for cleaning and shutdown. In a rental, replacement or duct changes belong with the responsible owner or installer.

Do not trade ventilation for a tiny saving

Use the hood according to the cooking and appliance guidance, especially where fuel-burning equipment is present. An electricity estimate cannot tell you the required airflow or replace an indoor-air assessment. If you want a more complete household energy comparison, identify that exhaust can affect conditioned-air loads, but do not invent a fixed penalty. Start with the direct fan-and-light calculation and label the wider effects as outside its scope.
