Count every heated stage
Start the clock when you switch the oven on, not when food goes inside. End it after any additional browning or keeping-warm stage. The heating elements may cycle, so nameplate watts multiplied by elapsed time is a full-power estimate rather than a measurement.
Record the cooking mode as well. Toast, convection bake and broil can activate different elements or fans. Comparing two recipes with the same dial temperature does not establish that they used the same electrical energy.
Calculate one session and one month
Assume a permitted energy meter records 0.80 kWh from a cold start to the end of cooking. At an illustrative $0.18/kWh, that session costs $0.144, or about 14 cents. Fifteen comparable sessions total 12 kWh and $2.16.
If you only know a 1,500 W maximum input and a 40-minute session, the constant-power calculation gives 1.00 kWh. Label it as that assumption; do not silently replace the measured 0.80 kWh with the higher figure.
Compare portions that fit
A countertop oven may cook your dinner in one tray but need three batches for guests. Compare the total energy for all batches, including reheating between them, with the larger oven’s complete session. Keep food quantity, starting condition and final cooking result equivalent. A cost per serving is more informative than a cost per minute when the appliances have different capacities.
Make the next decision practical
Use an oven you already own to establish a baseline before buying another appliance. Note whether a new unit would replace existing cooking or simply add snack sessions. Include its purchase price and counter-space requirement. For measurement, use only equipment rated and approved for the appliance, with the placement and clearances required by its manual. The useful result is a repeatable cost for your actual meal.
