Define the coffee routine
Decide whether you are costing one cup, one pot or a whole day. For a drip machine, record brewing, hot-plate time and powered idle time. For an espresso machine, note initial heat-up, the ready period and steaming. A wattage printed on one machine cannot describe every coffee-making design.
Also record cup count. Brewing one large pot and brewing several small batches may deliver the same amount of coffee with different total energy. Compare a consistent quantity you actually drink.
Add brewing and the warming plate
Imagine brewing uses 0.15 kWh and the plate averages 100 W for two hours afterward. The plate adds 0.20 kWh, so the total is 0.35 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, that is $0.063 per day or $1.89 over 30 days.
These are hypothetical values. If your machine automatically switches the plate off after a shorter interval, use that observed interval. If a rated 100 W element cycles, its average draw may be lower than this constant-power assumption.
Check what happens after auto-off
Observe whether auto-off ends heating or removes nearly all input power; those are different outcomes. An energy meter must be sensitive enough to resolve a small idle load. The DOE standby measurement reference explains why low-power measurement needs care. A display reading zero on an inexpensive meter does not by itself prove that consumption is exactly zero.
Evaluate a change without overstating savings
A thermal carafe or a shorter heated holding period can be compared using the energy actually avoided. If a $30 purchase avoided the entire illustrative $1.08 monthly hot-plate cost, simple payback would be about 28 months at daily use. Use a smaller saving if you brew less often. Choose compatible equipment and follow shutdown instructions; a modest energy calculation should not become a claim that every coffee drinker needs a new machine.
