Count minutes correctly
A kettle may have a large watt figure but run for only a short period. Monthly cost depends on the accumulated operating time. Convert minutes to hours before using a formula: four minutes is 4 ÷ 60 hours, not 0.4 hours.
For a hypothetical constant 1,500 W draw, 1.5 kW × (4 ÷ 60) hours = 0.1 kWh. Multiplying by $0.18/kWh gives $0.018 per session. That is 1.8 cents, not 18 cents. Keep the unrounded amount when estimating repeated sessions.
Scale up the routine you actually have
Three identical sessions daily over 30 days would be 90 sessions. The example therefore uses 9 kWh and costs $1.62 during that period. At $0.30/kWh, the same energy would cost $2.70.
These are arithmetic scenarios, not a measured time-to-boil claim. Water volume, starting temperature and the appliance’s behavior can change the duration. If you use a keep-warm function, give that separate attention rather than assuming the cost ends when the water first reaches the desired temperature.
Match the water to the task
The Energy Saving Trust advises avoiding unnecessary water heating. Apply that principle within the kettle’s minimum and maximum fill instructions; do not underfill it simply to chase a shorter run time. Measure what you need for the drinks or recipe, and follow the product’s care guidance.
For a personal comparison, use the same kettle, similar starting conditions and the amount you need. Record complete-session energy if suitable equipment and instructions permit it. A difference in water quantity is a different job, so identify it rather than calling the whole difference an efficiency improvement.
Compare appliances on an equal job
When comparing a kettle with another water-heating method, use the same required quantity and final result. A microwave’s cooking wattage and a kettle’s electrical input are different kinds of figures. Compare measured input energy or clearly described input-power scenarios instead.
