Why one listing shows two numbers
LG’s LP1023BSSM listing, checked for this guide, identifies the same portable unit as 10,000 BTU SACC and 13,500 BTU ASHRAE. This is a concrete example of why comparing only the largest number in a product headline can mislead. It is not a recommendation to buy that model.
SACC means seasonally adjusted cooling capacity. Keep its figure in a separate column from the ASHRAE figure. Do not invent a universal conversion factor from this one product’s ratio; it does not establish how every portable design will compare.
Build a consistent shortlist
For each candidate, record exact model number, SACC, ASHRAE capacity if supplied, electrical input, hose configuration and installation requirements. If one listing omits the comparable capacity figure, seek the manufacturer’s specification before declaring a winner.
A higher capacity rating also does not automatically make the unit appropriate for your bedroom. Room size, sun exposure, layout and the model’s installation guidance still belong in the sizing decision.
Keep the cost calculation separate
Imagine one suitable unit averages 700 W during your cooling schedule and another averages 800 W under comparable conditions. Over eight hours, the hypothetical difference is 0.80 kWh, worth about 14 cents at $0.18/kWh.
That example uses electrical input and operating time, not BTU. You cannot calculate the same result merely by subtracting the two capacity ratings printed on one appliance.
Check what the window must support
Before purchasing, confirm that the exhaust kit fits your permitted window opening and that the hose arrangement can follow the manual. Include floor space, drainage instructions and the return policy in your notes. A consistent rating comparison narrows the options; it does not replace installation checks or predict your room’s actual comfort. Save the specification pages so later price comparisons still refer to the same model and rating method.
