Measure the room you will cool
Measure the length and width in feet. A rectangular bedroom that is 12 feet by 15 feet has an area of 180 square feet. Include connected space if it will remain open and part of the cooling job. Do not silently assume the appliance will cool the whole apartment.
Write down ceiling height, afternoon sun, the number of regular occupants and heat-producing equipment. These details make the room more useful to describe than “small bedroom.”
Use a sizing reference as a starting point
ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner chart associates 150–250 square feet with 6,000 BTU/h under its base assumptions, including an eight-foot ceiling. Its guidance includes adjustments for substantial shade, strong sun, additional occupants and kitchen use. Follow the current chart and the selected manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying one size to every room.
ENERGY STAR also notes that an oversized unit can satisfy the temperature setting before removing enough moisture. Buying extra capacity is not automatically a comfort upgrade.
Keep capacity and consumption separate
A 6,000 BTU/h cooling rating is not 6,000 watts of electrical draw. Do not put a BTU number in the watts field of a cost calculator. Find the model’s electrical power or, better, representative measured energy use.
Example: your candidate has an adequate cooling specification and your own measurement suggests average use of 450 watts over six hours. At $0.18/kWh for 30 days, that scenario costs 0.45 × 6 × 30 × 0.18 = $14.58. The room-sizing reference did not produce that power figure; it is a separate input.
Check the installation before ordering
Use your room notes to narrow the capacity, then verify the exact model’s permitted window dimensions, installation requirements and electrical supply. Ask for help with unusual ceiling heights, complex layouts or rooms that are hard to keep comfortable.
A useful shopping record contains room dimensions, model number, manufacturer sizing guidance, opening measurements, installation cost and return conditions. Keeping those details in one place makes it easier to identify which options are actually suitable.
Keep a room record beside the sizing reference
Use the worksheet to separate measurements from assumptions. For a rectangular 12 by 15 foot room, the area is 180 square feet. Write down ceiling height and whether another space stays open to this room before applying a capacity reference.
The ENERGY STAR room-AC guidance is the source for the base example above. It is a starting point, not a site inspection. Record the reference you consulted and the model’s own requirements, especially when the room differs from the chart’s assumptions.
